BEARS AND BEATLES ROCK AT PHOENIX BALL 2005
CPB Gala fundraises for local charities and Pakistan Earthquake Relief Fund
Over 900 guests, including Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion, attended the 7th annual Phoenix Ball on Sunday October 16, 2004 at the Mississauga Convention Centre.
This year's proceeds from the Ball were donated to the following charities: Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto, Credit Valley Hospital, The Hazel McCallion Endowment Fund, Smile China Project, Trillium Health Centre, University of Toronto at Mississauga, and the Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care in Mississauga. Each of these charities received $10,000 from the CPB Foundation.
"With the generous support of our guests, sponsors and volunteers, the great work of these charitable organizations will hopefully be one step closer to being eternal like the Chinese phoenix," said David Maung, the Gala Chair for the Ball.
100 cuddly teddy bears were also sold at the Ball raising another $5,000 for the Pakistan Earthquake Relief Fund. Each purchaser of a bear was also entered into a draw for a trip for 2 to Las Vegas, which was won by Chin Ngong (David) Choi (Ticket No. 018). With a matching donation from The Mississauga News, a total of $10,000 was donated to World Vision for the Pakistan Earthquake Relief Fund.
Special recognition was also given at the Ball to Peel Regional Police Chief Noel Catney who is retiring this year after more than 30 years on the force. During his tenure, Chief Catney helped make Mississauga the safest city in Canada. CPB presented to Chief Catney the Chinese statues of the Gods of Fortune, Luck, and Longevity.
Entertainment for the evening was provided by the FabFour - the Ultimate Tribute to the Beatles who delighted guests not only with their likeness and costumes of the famous group, but also with their renditions of their most famous hits.
The Mississauga Board of Chinese Professionals & Businesses (CPB) would like to extend our thanks to all of our sponsors, guests, and friends for making this year's Phoenix Ball another great success.
